Do you have a favorite time of year to read?

Springtime is ideal. It is the season of new growth, rebirth, budding and blooming. It seems like a good time to me to jump-start your brain. You could fill it with new, non-fiction facts, intriguing mysteries, science fantasy worlds of your own making, or even a little romance. Spring is the harbinger of fresh starts and new beginnings, so maybe try out a new genre of books. You might just discover a new favorite.

Summer is made for reading. In summertime, the television is rarely on in my house. I find the airwaves are filled mostly with re-runs and mundane pilot programs. The alternative? Create your own programming. Grab a good book and head out to the hammock, the lounge chair, or the beach, and lose yourself in its pages. A really good read can be as refreshing as a dip in the pool.

Autumn is my favorite time to read; when there’s a chill in the air and sunshine streaming through the window. There is nowhere I would rather be than lounging on the window seat, basking in the warmth of the rays and the words. Stormy  weather makes for good reading, too. Reading and relaxing inside, while outside the leaves blow in frenzied swirls and the rain pelts angrily against the windows. There is only one word for it: cozy.

Winter is an awesome time to read. Especially to young children. In front of a toasty fire, at bedtime, or as an afternoon treat with a mug of chocolatey cocoa. Tales of pilgrim feasts, Old Man Winter, Christmas, and Hanukah, will capture their attention for hours. Be sure to take turns. The only thing better than reading to your kids is letting them read to you.

Reading is never out of season. It is a year-round sport. Train well and often. You’ll be a winner, no matter what time of year it is.
